Reminders for the week! | Curriculum Night: |
- Bring back those library books, so we can check out again on Wednesday next week! - I am still looking for a parent to take on the role of "party planner" for our class this year! With Halloween fast approaching, please e-mail me if you are interested. We can certainly have a small group of parents working together on this one. Once we know who are party planner(s) are, then I will meet with them to discuss the possibilities for our class Halloween party! Specialist schedule for October | For new QAE families, Curriculum Night is an annual SPS evening information session for parents. This year, QAE parents/guardians will begin in the cafeteria at 6:30pm for staff introductions and an overview of our five pillars and QAE foundational elements, such as Project Based Learning (PBL), social emotional learning and innovative technology. Then parents/guardians will move to specific classrooms where grade group teams will provide presentations on academic programs, social emotional learning and supporting your child at home. Teachers are providing presentations that were collaboratively planned as grade group teams this year so that parents can learn about the academic programs, activities and events that are being offered in all classrooms in that grade. A 20-minute presentation will be offered by each grade group team at 7 pm and repeated at 7:30pm to accommodate families with more than one child. Beginning at 7:30 pm, Janine Roy will be available in the cafeteria to answer any remaining questions. The PTSA will be providing childcare. Info will come out in the rocket reader about this shortly. *The K team is looking forward to having you come into our classrooms and experience a little slice of kindergarten! |
MAP testing starts next week!
Next week, the students will take their first MAP tests. The MAP test, which stands for Measures of Academic Progress, is a nationally administered adaptable assessment that measures student growth and achievement in Math and Reading. (For more info go to http://www.nwea.org.) Please try to have students as well rested and fed as much as possible. Because the test is adaptive (increases difficulty when the student answers correctly) it often can be challenging for students. I make sure to tell them ahead of time that there will be questions they do not know, and that that is ok! Our adult message to them about this testing is that we do not want them to worry about the test, but we do want them to try their hardest by focusing and taking their time.
You can find an introduction, practice assessments, and mouse practice activities @ http://www.qaelibrary.org/map.html
This is the official SPS family message about this assessment:
Your kindergartner will be given the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment in January. The MAP assessment is taken on a computer and requires less than an hour. The assessment measures your child’s developing math and reading skills through a series of multiple choice questions that adapt to your child’s level of learning. The results will help your child’s teacher to measure growth and assess your child’s instructional level in order to determine where he or she may need more support or more challenge. The results are also a factor in Advanced Learning eligibility determinations. Thank you!
