This is something that we discuss as a class every year. In kindergarten, we are already teaching students how to take charge of their learning and become self-directed. The self-awareness and recognition that I play a part in the learning that happens in our classroom is really important. Their world is no longer just about "me," it is now about a community. Our classroom community works best when everyone is committed to helping the learning that is happening. When students can identify what areas they are doing well and what areas they need to work on, that is when we can make plans and develop solutions on how to get there. If someone truly can't focus on their learning, that's a problem. It's a problem that we need to work together to solve. Are they feeling safe and connected to their classmates, is the challenge really difficult for them to comprehend, do they need a snack to fuel their brain, do they need time to move their body and get their energy out? These are all real questions and real problems that need help. I am keeping the rubric they filled out with me and will share it with you at your November conference.
