We have been reading "The Incredible Flexible You" series. These books are explicitly teaching the Social Thinking concepts and vocabulary that we often assume kids just know. These have been great class meeting topics for us and an awesome chance to develop some common language together.
Our thoughts and our feelings are CONNECTED.Thoughts are in our brains and feelings are in our hearts. The characters in the book show how we have thoughts when we are alone and thoughts when we are around us. Our behavior effects the way others think and feel. Where is your body? and where is the rest of the group? Are we being safe if our body is drifting away from the group? We have been working on this one a lot already! What does it look like to be a whole body listener? Whole body listening it when your eyes, ears, mouth, hands, arms, legs, and feet are all calm and quiet. When you are listening to someone with your WHOLE body, that makes you and your friend happy. | What happens when you are with some friends and you all decide on a "group plan" and one friend decides to do their own plan? Oops! We say time and again in this book that It is hurtful to the group to go off and do your own plan when you have already decided as a group that you are going to work together. Imagine that your eyes have a line coming right out of them. That line is pointing to whatever you are looking at. We can guess what people are thinking about just by paying attention to what their eyes are looking at. Are you thinking about what your friend is saying if you aren't looking at them? |
