The first unit in the Readers' Workshop curriculum is "We are Readers!" In this unit students start out by exploring learn-about-the-world books (nonfiction books) with detailed pictures, maps, lots of labels, and exciting topics to help them get excited about books and feel like they are readers right from the start! In addition to students exploring nonfiction books, I focused my read alouds on books with no words. We put on our special "reading eyes" and were able to look at the pictures together and tell the story across the pages. These books are so powerful at this stage because it is training young readers to use the pictures as a resource, make sure that the story is making sense and each page is connected to the next, and gives them the confidence that they truly are readers!
