No one wants to get confused when they see a sign that says "FREE cookies" when it really says "FRESH cookies." We have been learning that when we get to tricky words, we need to use strong sound word power that looks not just at the beginning of the word, but and all the way through to the end to really make sure we solve it. We have been playing "guess the word games" to help us see how easy it is for books to trick us. We looked at the word, "train" for instance. This word could be truck, tricycle, tractor, ect. All of these would make sense based on what the poem is talking about. |
We are also noticing that some words we get to, we should even have to spend any brain power to stretch them out! These are our sight words that we should just know in a SNAP! When we truly know these words without having to stretch them out, it makes reading so much easier! In the title of this book, "Can you see the eggs?" There was only 1 word that wasn't a sight word! On the first page of the story we found 7 sight words and 5 words we needed to stretch out. When we know these words, books become less overwhelming to us and we can start really using out super powers to figure out the remaining unknown words. Here are the two lists we are working on if you want to practice at home!
