We are all being so BRAVE this week! We are taking turns getting up in front of the class and doing our final "All About Me" presentation. We are standing up in front of the class with the microphone and pointer to share a little bit more about ourselves. After each presentation is done, the audience gets a chance to give us a few compliments. I have been blown away by the thoughtful things they have said! ~ I really like how you added so many details to your house. ~ I want to compliment you for saying so much about your poster. ~ I like how your voice was loud enough for everyone to hear The audience has also been doing such a great job listening to each presentation! We have really learned a lot about what it means to be a great speaker and listener. Students will be taking home their posters as they finish their presentation in class. |

It is all coming together! We worked really hard to piece together all of the components of our "All About Me" poster. These posters will serve as a talking and reference point when we do our final presentations sharing who we are with the class. Here are the components and speaking points we will be hitting in our presentations. - Self- Portrait - Favorite foods - Home - Family - Things we love This week we practiced presenting our poster to a small group in stations. After Thanksgiving we will watch those videos and see what we can do better on for our final presentation in front of the whole class! Exploring how we are the same and different
The museum of us!Last week, we had one of my favorite days of the year, the gallery walk! The tables were set, the objects were laid out, and each kindergartener got their chance to be in the spotlight. When I looked around at the objects they don't seem all that groundbreaking; a stuffy, some baseball cards, a soccer ball, ect. But when you look a little closer and start listening to what the kids have to say, you can't help but think to yourself "this is it!" A 5 or 6 year old sharing something that they truly care about, their face shining as they talk about it, being brave and sharing a piece of their life with others. This is the first step in understanding what makes them unique. I heard kids make powerful statements like, "I am a scientist, I like to build things, This is my favorite thing to do." All of those statements are helping them realize that these things (what they love) help define their identity. What makes a good speaker?
We are diving into our first kindergarten project, Who am I? The driving questions of this PBL project are "Who am I?" and "How are we the same?" and "How are we different?" By the end of the project, we will expect our kindergarten students to be able to: ~ speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly. ~ ask and answers questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. ~ describe familiar people, places, things and events and with prompting and support provide additional detail. ~ look at and acknowledge a speaker. This week, we read lots of books this week that helped us think ~ What Makes Me, Me?. During our learning stations, we reflected on this question and created drawings to communicate to our classmates who we are. We focused on our favorite things to do! This art piece will be used as a component of our "All About Me" poster that we share with the class. In addition to looking inside ourselves, we are also looking out at the world and see how we are the same as and different than kids around all over the world. We will read books and talk about some ways that all kids around the world are the same (they all laugh and cry, they all have hearts and love...) and different (they speak different languages, have different names, live in different places and have different colored skin...). Assessing our listeningWe have been talking about what "listening" looks like since day 1! We had a fabulous opportunity to put our listening to the test this week with the Book It! performance group coming. Before the play started, I introduced the formal listening rubric and told them that I wanted them to pay attention to their listening during the play. When the show was over, we came back and assessed how we did! We will be using a LOT of rubrics to assess ourselves this year, and this one is just the start. Self-reflection is so important for these little ones.
